Perry was born in Chicago to two actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The role of Jackie Harris was played by her mother in each of the two shows she starred in on Roseanne. Her parents, however, did not let her perform until she was an adult because of the impact stress might affect their child. Perry was shy in high-school and was not a performer. The actress began her acting career at Northwestern University to gain friends when she moved to the university from Boston University. After graduating Perry went to New York to search for television work landing small roles on series such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent however, her homesickness led the actress back to California and she was able to find acting work. She and her mother starred on Broadway with her in The Other Place, in 2013. In 2015 she performed alongside her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry starred in nine episodes in 2016 of ABC's drama The Family. In 2017, Perry was a part-time character in ABC's thriller about politics Scandal that starred her father. She also played her younger Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon, an CBS spin-off from The Big Bang Theory. She got the part in an audition that was open despite having a connection to this role.
